What is a Face Lift?
With time, the skin of the face begins to wrinkle and sag in response to the effects of gravity and time. Exposure to the sun, genetic influences and other factors can contribute to the effects of aging. A facelift can correct these conditions and give people a more youthful appearance. This procedure involves the tightening of facial and neck skin and muscles, as well as the removal of excess skin. Facelift incisions are placed in areas where they are minimally visible. The objective is to elevate the underlying structures and redrape the skin on the face in order to give a more youthful, healthy and rested appearance. A facelift will improve the contour of your face and jaw line, but it will not correct sun damage or fine wrinkles that have developed on the skin’s surface. To treat these conditions a Micro Laser Peel™ or Profile™ Laser Skin Peel may be needed.
Most facelift candidates are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Although the procedure can be performed on older individuals, it is best for patients who still have relatively good skin elasticity and a strong facial bone structure. When preparing to undergo facelift surgery you must abstain from smoking prior to the procedure and during the recovery process in order to avoid complications. Consumption of aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs prior to facelift surgery should be stopped. These drugs are blood thinners, and may lead to increased bleeding during the course of the facelift. Individuals planning to undergo more than 15 pounds of weight loss should discuss how this will affect their facelift results with Dr. Snow prior to surgery.
- Tightening facial muscles: The underlying structures of your face, also known as the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system (SMAS), tend to weaken and sag with age. Before repairing your loose skin, Dr. Snow first tightens and rearranges this underlying structure into a better configuration. This puts less tension on your skin and helps the results of your face lift to last much longer.
- Repairing loose skin: Sagging skin will be carefully trimmed and tightened to restore a more youthful, natural look. Facial skin should not be overly tightened, or it can lead to a ‘pulled’ appearance.
- Improving facial contours: A mid facelift helps restore a smoother look to the cheeks and lower eyelids, while a lower facelift creates a more attractive jawline contour, eliminating jowls and smoothing out the neck area.
